Our objective is to make sure your visits with us will be pleasant and informative. Your initial appointment (for a nominal fee) will consist of an examination and a discussion of your needs with the potential treatment options. This appointment generally lasts approximately 45 minutes to
1 hour. During your visit, we will address the orthodontic needs of you or your child, provide a thorough explanation of any problems, and review possible treatment options. We always schedule adequate time to completely answer all your questions, and can also address questions regarding insurance or financial options during this time.
Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your first visit:
-
Recent dental x-rays taken within the past 6 months
-
If you have dental insurance, please bring the necessary completed forms or your dental insurance card. This will save time and allow us to help you process any claims.

If it is determined that treatment is needed, you will be scheduled for diagnostic records. These records usually consist of study models, diagnostic photographs and cephalometric x-rays. Once these orthodontic records have been obtained, Dr. Ohlenforst will review them and determine an individualized treatment plan for your orthodontic needs. We will review your treatment plan with you, make financial arrangements, and can set up visits for treatment to begin.

Periodic visits are an important part of orthodontic treatment. Generally, we will want to see you every 4-6 weeks to check your progress and make adjustments to your appliances. During this time, you will need to keep appointments, follow instructions, and practice good oral hygiene with proper nutrition. Also, be sure to continue to visit your dentist regularly. Once your braces are removed, retainers are utilized to hold your teeth in their new positions until your bone, gums, and muscles adapt to the new teeth positions.

Braces may be worn for anywhere from 6 months to 3 years (or longer), depending on the age of the patient, the severity of the problem, and the degree of movement necessary.

Before any orthodontic treatment can begin, your family dentist should ensure that all cavities have been treated, that your mouth is healthy, and that you are free from any periodontal disease. You should also schedule regular dental appointments (cleaning and cavity checkup visits) about every 6 months during your orthodontic treatment. It's very important that you keep these regular dental appointments
since we are as an aid to your family dentist,
and not a replacement!
